چکیده

The non-hydrostatic (NH) compressible Euler equations of dry atmosphere are solved in a simplified two dimensional (2-D) slice framework employing a spectral element method (SEM) for the horizontal discretization and a finite difference method (FDM) for the vertical discretization. The SEM uses high-order nodal basis functions asso-5 ciated with Lagrange polynomials based on Gauss–Lobatto–Legendre (GLL) quadra-ture points. The FDM employs a third-order upwind biased scheme for the vertical flux terms and a centered finite difference scheme for the vertical derivative terms and quadrature. The Euler equations used here are in a flux form based on the hydrostatic pressure vertical coordinate, which are the same as those used in the Weather Re-10 search and Forecasting (WRF) model, but a hybrid sigma-pressure vertical coordinate is implemented in this model. We verified the model by conducting widely used standard benchmark tests: the inertia-gravity wave, rising thermal bubble, density current wave, and linear hydrostatic mountain wave. The results from those tests demonstrate that the horizontally spectral element vertically finite difference model is accurate and 15 robust. By using the 2-D slice model, we effectively show that the combined spatial discretization method of the spectral element and finite difference method in the horizontal and vertical directions, respectively, offers a viable method for the development of a NH dynamical core.

Verification of a non-hydrostatic dynamical core using the horizontal spectral element method and vertical finite difference method: 2-D aspects

The non-hydrostatic (NH) compressible Euler equations for dry atmosphere were solved in a simplified two-dimensional (2-D) slice framework employing a spectral element method (SEM) for the horizontal discretization and a finite difference method (FDM) for the vertical discretization. By using horizontal SEM, which decomposes the physical domain into smaller pieces with a small communication ste...

The small planet : a test-bed for High-Resolution Cloud Modeling with the non-hydrostatic IFS

IFS Global non-hydrostatic simulations of mesoscale phenomena are possible with low computational cost with the “small planet” test bed available in the IFS at ECMWF. The dry non-hydrostatic dynamical core of ALADIN (Bubnova et al, 1995, Bénard et al. 2009) has been adapted to the IFS and a series of non-hydrostatic phenomena have been explored on a reduced-size sphere (Wedi and Smolarkiewicz, ...

Dynamical behavior and synchronization of chaotic chemical reactors model

In this paper, we discuss the dynamical properties of a chemical reactor model including Lyapunov exponents, bifurcation, stability of equilibrium and chaotic attractors as well as necessary conditions for this system to generate chaos. We study the synchronization of chemical reactors model via sliding mode control scheme. The stability of proposed method is proved by Barbalate’s lemma. Numeri...

Adaptive Grids for Weather and Climate Models

An adaptive grid technique has been applied to a revised version of NCAR/NASA’s next generation dynamical core for climate and weather research. This hydrostatic so-called Lin-Rood dynamics package is based on a conservative and monotonic finite volume discretization in flux form. The adaptive model design utilizes a spherical adaptive-grid library which is based on a cache-efficient block-stru...
